8 Women

2002
Marcel is found with a knife in his back, and the household of 8 women are the suspects. Is it his bisexual sister? One of the two bisexual maids or his just-seduced wife (that sister gets around)? The daughter that isn't his, or the bookish one that is? What about the pathetic virginal aunt? Or his not-so-crippled mother in law? Look for characters who dress in lime green and red, who break into song (really) and, if you're looking for a campy laugh, look no further than 8 Women.

Boys Don't Cry
Rating: 2
Buy from TLA Video
1999
Lots of critics love this film. Hilary and Chloe were nominated for Oscars. Boys Don't Cry was a big disappointment. First, I should point out that I don't consider this a lesbian film: Brandon is portrayed as a woman who shouts "I'm not a lesbian!" and the entire story revolves around her unwillingness to accept her sexuality (she can't accept being female, never mind lesbian). The film stands as a cautionary tale against hating yourself, but that's it.

People in the audience were talking and yawning during the film. Do yourself a favour, watch the Brandon Teena story instead.

Chloe Seveigny said " I first met Kim (Pierce) when I went in to audition for Brandon and my agent set it up. It was pretty much by the book. I went in, met with her, talked about the story and I'd known about it since, like, '96 maybe and talked about Brandon and Lana and girls wanting to be boys and this and that. She said, "Have you ever wanted to be a boy? 'Cause the girl who plays this part had at least this desire." I said, "No," I couldn't lie to her and, "maybe I should come back," and then I never came back in. I just got the part after lots of campaigning. "

Clara's Summer

2002
Here is a re-pew of Clara's Summer. It is a French and French-language film about a girl, her best friend and summer camp. Sounds good, but it was very pro-hetero and anti-homo. Clara's best friend declared her love for Clara, and Clara just blew her off, so the friend went looking for love with a boy (the only nice male in the film). The boys were absolute demons in this film, making fun of the lesbian (gouine, which means dyke) and trying to fuck the girls with no regard for them. They harassed the cool-bi-girl-from-the-big-city Sonia. Eventually Clara and Sonia get together (much to the joy of the strange straight couple sitting beside me, talking all the time every time the girls kissed, like they came to a gay and lesbian film festival expecting something else??). The best friend and the boy get together too (too bad, she was uber-hot). Overall, the film was poorly put together, it was a fairly dumb script, and not very pro-lgbtqqteieio. When I filled out the ballot, I gave it a 2 out of 5. I might have been generous, but nobody walked out, so I couldn't give it a one.

A Lesbian fashion designer is betrayed when her female lover leaves her for a man. A lurid and highly stylized account of the mangled web of domination, sadomasochism and alternating jealousy among three lesbians. This is Jack Nicholson's "career-making" film. Minor roles by Toni Basil and Helena Kallianiotes reputedly as Lesbian hitchhikers. However, unless I saw a heavily edited version, they are Lesbian only by implication: they are travelling together, they argue a lot, and one of them is a radical environmentalist. I'm keeping this on the list only because it is often on other lists. From what I saw, it doesn't deserve to be here.

1998
From lesbian filmmaker Marleen Gorris comes this non-lesbian themed story of one woman's unexpected and melancholy reflection on her life. On a perfect day in 1923, memories of her youth course through the day's events as Mrs. Dalloway (Redgrave) prepares for another of her elaborate parties. In an ordered English garden, a young veteran makes his own peace with the ravages of shell shock; at a nearby bench, Mrs. Dalloway's rejected suitor of decades past indulges his own reminiscences. Director Gorris (Antonia's Line) has captured Virginia Woolf's novel of that society of manners, a complex social structure unaware of its impending demise; juxtaposing it against the oncoming realities of the modern age. A dreamlike quality imbues recalled regrets, passions, conviction; defining relationships that survive time and distance, describing lives moulded unrecognized, subconscious yearnings fleetingly glimpsed in chaste kisses and unexpected flares of emotion. An intricately crafted film sparkled with superb portrayals, Mrs. Dalloway unerringly evokes a time recently, irrevocably past.

Mulholland Drive
Rating: 2

2001
Another wild film from Lynch which has a young aspiring actress getting involved with an amnesiac woman. Don't try to understand it: it's all a dream. Zoom in on the pillow, dream time. The Cowboy says to wake up, it's time to wake up. I can't believe I missed a Buffy rerun for this.

If you are discussing this film with a stuffy, arrogant know-it-all, call the film a Mobius Strip of the subconscious, performance art that, because it's on tape, it's on tape (add the emphasis, just like in the movie), transcends live performance art, life itself, because it must be repeated, without variance, every time. Although each time you watch it, it's different (raise your eyebrow here, smile knowingly and nod slightly as you reach for your drink). Wait for a response.

Note: do not confuse this with Mulholland Falls, which has a gay character.

She also faces a dormitory filled with underwear-clad beauties headed by Charlie (Williams), a platinum blonde thug with a face only a near-sighted mother could love. Oh yes, they're bad! There is plenty of nudity, riots, cat fights and breakouts to keep any fan entranced, and if that doesn't do it, the sight of Danning as the militaristic warden will. The title song says it all, "So Young, So Bad, So What."

This campy psychological thriller stars Elizabeth Taylor as a middle-aged tart who becomes involved in a strange relationship with a mentally unbalanced rich orphan. Taylor's character, still in mourning over the loss of a young daughter, finds her emotional and financial needs answered with "poor little doe" Mia. They play mommy and daughter, yet with interesting lesbian undertones. As they become involved in mutually destructive emotional mind games, Farrow's sexually abusive stepfather returns unexpectedly, prompting a dramatic escalation of tensions. Look for bad editing, poor continuity and over the top acting.

This film about high-class strippers is so bad, it can't even make it as a cult film. Includes a minor Lesbian subtext. The rags-to-nipple clamps tale (and raunchy update of All About Eve) centers around the tough-talking Nomi, a brain-dead bleached blonde Barbie doll who is lured to the bright lights, fast living and tacky lifestyle of Las Vegas. Blessed with spunk, a curvaceous body and piston-gyrating hips, Nomi - beginning at a sleazy lap dance dive - steadily claws up the greased pole of success, going from trailer trash tramp to glittery star. Along this road kill of broken dreams, Nomi finds herself the object of interest from Crystal, the coke-sniffing, leering star/slut of the Vegas strip who happily wallows in her own hedonism.

Twins arrive at the doorstep of their fanatically religious uncle. One succumbs to the charms of Count Karnstein, and becomes a vampire (the premise being that if you are an evil person, when you are bitten by a vampire you become a vampire. If you are a good person, you die). She is invited to join the Count to "play" with a female victim, and instead of biting her victim's neck, she bites her victim's breast. That's it for lesbian content. But it's a good vampire film. The last of a 3-part tale of the Karnstein vampires, with Vampire Lovers and Lust for a Vampire.

A naive German journalist, Dorothee Muller, searches for romantic love in Hamburg and San Francisco's Lesbian community. This film turns from narrative drama, while Dorothee thinks she is strait, to an impersonal, almost technical documentary style when Dorothee meets up with Susie Sexpert and starts learning about Lesbianism. In fact, the film takes on a patronizing sex-education quality to it. Dorothee thinks she has found romantic love, but she is charged $500 for the date. By the end of the film, she rejects the idea of romantic love while accepting her Lesbianism (the film suggests that the two are mutually exclusive). The sex scenes and strip club scenes are unerotic and uninteresting, and the acting is awkward.

What an unusual film to view in the 1990s. Given the director's very conservative views about things like homosexuality, most likely it's meant to be a demeaning satire. But hey, what he directed and what I see can be two different things, right? Three drag queens play three women who are learning about women's liberation. They dabble with lesbianism and bisexuality along the way, but things go full circle and they end up right back in their miserable, heterosexual little lives. Lots of sex and male nudity, but with dialogue that's a fascinating look into the rhetoric and ideology that has created one of the most powerful (if misunderstood) political movements in the 20th century: feminism.

A film about the problems and issues of sex, from a mostly heterosexual point of view. Five friends (2 couples and 1 guy) start sleeping with each other, or themselves, or whomever they can find. Includes a wife who starts seeing a woman. Not a great film, although it has its moments.
