From the director of All God's Children comes a women's music documentary. This film chronicles the Women's Music Cultural Movement and its evolution from a "girl with guitar" to a revolution in the roles of women in music and culture. The movement gave birth to an alternative industry that changed women and music forever. Through festival and performance footage, interviews, and archival material, the film delves into the rich and beautiful history of women creating a cultural life based in a commitment to diversity, personal integrity, feminism and women loving women. In its heyday, during the 1970s and 80s, women's music offered a different message than mainstream musical culture. It opened doors for women musicians, producers, sound and light technicians and for new women-owned recording companies and women-oriented shows. Pioneers like Cris Williamson, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Margie Adam and Linda Tillery recall the frustrations and the triumphs of finding women sound engineers and other professionals in a completely male-dominated industry.

Blair is captured by Communists after inadvertently witnessing the abduction of a political dissident. She is sent to a hell-hole women's prison where the lesbian warden is sexually kept in check by prisoner Sylvia Kristel. A campy Kristel is the power-hungry vixen who reigns over a bevy of tattooed beauties. The film's darker, anti-gay side makes this action drama of real social interest for its equating of lesbianism with Communism and repression -- only the "bad girls" are lesbian.

Adapted from Denis Diderot's famous 18th-century novel about Suzanne Simonin--an illegitimate teenager forced to enter a convent by her family--this is the most accessible by far of all of Rivette's features. It has a straightforward narrative that mainly concentrates on Suzanne's experiences at two convents--one severe and punitive, the other "progressive" and more worldly (though no less stifling for Suzanne when she finds herself pursued by the lesbian mother superior)--before she escapes to encounter a different kind of oppression in the world outside. Far from a nonbeliever, Suzanne is a devout character without a religious calling, and the film as a whole is a complex celebration of her continuous drive toward freedom. From France.

Join bisexual singer Ani Difranco, her band, and members of the extended Righteous Babe family as they criss-cross the country in this long-awaited, one-of-a-kind portrait of Ani at work. Videographers spent years on Ani's trail, capturing her onstage, in the studio, and on the tour bus--footage which Ani herself shaped into a very personal self-portrait. The resulting movie, which draws on material from as far back as 1997, focuses on her 2000 and 2001 tours. This impressionistic collage takes you way behind the scenes; you'll watch a new song take shape and learn the stories behind some favorite older ones. Over two dozen songs are featured, including two brand new Ani songs and previously unreleased live versions of many of her classics. As dynamic, thought-provoking, and fun as one of her concerts, Render gives you a sneak peek into Ani's life and music in her own words, on her own terms. It's a visual live album, it's a road film, it's an art flick, it's a document of a movement in time.

In a phenomenal film debut, Natali Broods portrays a beautiful, young Belgian woman known only as S. She has moved to New York with her abusive boyfriend, and leads a life filled with chaos, trauma, and loneliness. Her distant mother is an alcoholic prostitute; her father was executed for murder. S's relationships are full of violence and twisted love.
After her boyfriend sleeps with an ex girlfriend in her presence, S. is so disgusted, she shoots them both in a strangely calm fit of passion. She returns to Brussels, where she becomes involved with the beautiful Marie. However, love is not enough, and she descends further into a downward spiral of insanity, manifesting in promiscuous sex, violence, and murder.
Containing graphic violence, with both heterosexual and lesbian sex, this film is like a car wreck—you can't help but stare. Crossing the fine line between reality and surrealism, while juxtaposing stunning cinematography with raw imagery, this is a strangely disturbing portrait of a physically beautiful young woman, unable to cope with the demons that are gripping her soul. With an edgy musical soundtrack, and lush cinematography, dysfunction has never looked so good! Filled with feminist and religious metaphor, there is more than meets the eye to this haunting vision of a girl on the edge! Not for the faint of heart, this film will not easily be forgotten. Salome - Alla Nazimova directed (under her husband Charles Bryant's name) this extravagant version of the Oscar Wilde play, with sets and costumes by Valentino's wife (and Nazimova's lover) Natasha Rambova, who based her work on the erotic drawings of Aubrey Beardsley. Sensual and wildly stylized, the story of Herod's vixen stepdaughter who danced for the head of John the Baptist is delightfully outrageous. Reportedly, the film was made with an all-gay/lesbian cast and crew. (Color Tinted)
Lot in Sodom - This European-influenced, avante-garde interpretation of the Old Testament tale of the trials of Kit features homoerotic imagery, sensual dances and distorted multiple images in telling its tale of a good man and his family living amidst a sexually charged band of homosexual Sodomites. The handsome angel, sent down by God to find 50 good men in the city, finds only writhing, half-naked bodies and thus destroys the city. (Black & White)

Originally made for HBO, this incisively funny comedy/performance piece by "bad girl" actress and comedienne Sandra Bernhard is a delight from beginning to end. Filmed in Francisco and shot by famed cinematographer Haskell Wexler, both the video and DVD includes 30 minutes of bonus material not seen on the cable broadcast. From her acting debut as the crazed, yet vulnerable kidnapper of Jerry Lewis in The King of Comedy her career has been successful ( if a bit notorious.) Who could forget her memorable screen performances, her deliciously scandalous and stormy relationship with Madonna, her Off-Broadway one-woman shows and her self-acknowledged bisexuality. Yes, Miss Bernhard is a force to be reckoned with! Dangerously witty, sarcastic and intelligent yet oddly romantic, this performance targets a wide range of topics from politics to pop culture to celebrities (Courtney Love, Rosie O’Donnell, Mariah Carey and Fleetwood Mac are just a few of her victims). Super-pregnant at the time of filming for her first Broadway show, the lady is armed and ready to take aim! If you're in the public eye (and just a wee bit pretentious), duck! DVD contains 30 minutes of bonus material. It's presented full-frame with stereo sound.

"A campy romp among swinging couples, Radley Metzger's 1973 movie is an early example of bisexual erotic film. Score may remind you of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf - but here, the games are less traumatic and far sexier. Elvira and Jack bet on which of them can seduce a young innocent first...to the delights of (surprise!) same-sex lovemaking. There's a dinner party, parlour games, and a session of dress-up playacting, all leading to the inevitable girl-girl, boy-boy sex scenes. All this is handled with the requisite style of soft-core maestro Metzger, whose first foray into elegant hard-core eroticism will be appreciated by today's lesbian, gay and - especially - bisexual audiences in a way he may not have expected. Bring a friend...or two...and take bets on who will score first."

The film chronicles the rapid social rise of Sandrine and Nathalie, two avowed non-lesbians who set out on a quest for power using sexuality as their principal weapon. They learn to arouse themselves, to control and simulate pleasure as needed, and to guard against love, the main obstacle for aspiring femmes fatales. It may be the product of naiveté, and it certainly leads to a bloody catastrophe, but their program of political resistance is directly related to the imaginary. Voyeurism with only one eye open.
If you are unfamiliar with Brisseau's work, find out more about him and his directorial style before you go to see the film, or be prepared for an atypical French film. From the opening strip-club scene, the tenuousness of the film's attachment to realism is apparent.

The basic premise: Lesbian galore use the high-priced services of an attractive man as a sex partner/sperm donor. The controversy: Lots of lesbians paying to have sex with a guy, which is nothing more than a heterosexual male fantasy.
Well-known lesbian author and sex educator Tristan Taormino, hired as a consultant by Lee (just as the Warchowski Brothers hired Susie Sexpert for Bound), defends the film, saying lesbians face a variety of options for getting pregnant. “ I can appreciate when lesbians say that they feel like they don’t see themselves, their lives, or their realities represented in this film, but I don’t think it is meant to represent all lesbians of color, all upwardly-mobile dykes, all lesbian moms, etc.,” she said.
African-American author Rosalind Lloyd, who appreciated Lee’s vision of lesbianism and black female sexuality in “She’s Gotta Have It,” was disappointed. “Real, authentic lesbians will not sleep with men, for any reason at all,” she said. “Spike is obviously striving to achieve wider appeal by portraying this much in the same way we’ve been bombarded with heterosexual sex scenes during the first season of ‘The L Word.’”

Start by making a cheap "nudie," throw in some Russ Meyer touches (see Faster Pussycat...Kill! Ringleader Big Shin (Marni Castle) and four of her girls break out from a women's prison and hole up in a farmhouse. The women, all sexually starved, silicone-breasted beauties, are tired of masturbating (Big Shin watching and slobbering) and want a man (read dick). So to keep her girls in line, Shin kidnaps a rich businesswoman's paid stud, and while waiting for the ransom, lets her ravenous underwear-clad women at him. Things get out of hand when Baby, Shin's favourite, joins in the hetero fun. The businesswoman (also played by Castle) has balls herself and hires "girl detective" Sweetie (Monique Duvall) (read bimbo with a gun) to recapture her invaluable gigolo. Su Friedrich's film explores the highly charged relationship between child and parent. Travelling backwards from the letter z, a young girl narrates twenty-six short stories which recount the memories about a father she both fears and admires. Images from family vacations, the circus and Death Valley, interlaced with her voiceover suggest an unbreachable distance, culminating in her father's betrayal. A startling beautiful and fearless account of the profound connection between father and daughter.

Inspired by Jean Genet's "The Maids," this provocative and polished drama is set in 1930s France and stars Joely Richardson and Jodhi May as two repressed sisters who work as servants to an obsessively demanding madam (Julie Walters) who rules her house, and the life of her daughter, with a velvet-gloved iron fist. Held virtual prisoners in the claustrophobic house, the two young women soon become incestuously involved with each other and their hot passions soon unravel their facade of orderliness. A highly sensual, intense, at times funny but ultimately unsettling tale.

Director Heidi Arnesen puts a twist on romantic comedy convention with Some Prefer Cake, her San Francisco-set first feature about a pair of best friends, one gay and one straight, united by their lack of judgment in matters of the heart. Kira, an aspiring comedian by night who fills orders in a comic book warehouse by day, spends her free time hunting new sexual conquests. Her friend Sydney's stuck in a rut fixing other people's copy at the local paper, dreaming of writing restaurant reviews and sublimating her sexual insecurities with food. This inspiring, award-winning documentary follows the 100-strong Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir as they travel across the continent to compete in the National Championships. Decked in purple waistcoats with the odd touch of chain and leather, the choir is the pride and joy of Australia's vibrant gay and lesbian community. From Gershwin to spirituals to Abba, the singing is joyful, the competition intense, and the backstage tension very real. Something to Sing About gives a rare insight into the workings of a large and celebrated choir and takes audiences on a rich, emotional musical journey.

Essentially a videotaped yet exhilarating speech, Sonia Johnson lectures on a variety of issues: the enslavement of women through the patriarchal society; the weaknesses of current feminist movements; and offering a vision of a new world order. Not lesbian-themed, the tape offers a fascinating insight of what possibilities exist for women, especially those willing to be radical in the fight for these rights.

Far from your ordinary “behind-the-scenes” documentary, The Cream Will Rise is an often time uncomfortably intimate but revelatory portrait of singer/songwriter Sophie B. Hawkins. A self-acknowledged ominsexual , Hawkins became a heroine in queer politics when she successfully opposed her record company’s insistence that she delete the “her” in her hit song, “Damn, I Wish I Were Your Lover.” Filmed by her ex-lover Gaston, the film follows Hawkins as she prepares for her 1996 cross-country tour and the release of her third album. Part diva, part free spirit and part emotionally traumatized woman-child, Hawkins allows a peek into her life that few stars would ever consent. For, in addition to scenes from her rehearsals and clips from her often-frenzied musical performances, events much more personal are uncovered. The camera is in tow as Hawkins returns to her childhood home in New York’s Upper West Side to both meet her mother and confront some long repressed childhood traumas. Those incredibly honest scenes with her family and especially her mother are quite astonishing. Through Hawkins’ moments of desperation and exhilaration and moments of self-discovery, we are witnesses to a complex and honest portrayal of a fascinating woman and artist.

This roller coaster ride depicting four days in the life of a group of speed freaks has a real gay feel to it. Blondie diva Deborah Harry plays a nosy man-hating, butch-dyke neighbor who steals the girl, Eric Roberts dives right into the role an over-the-top totally queenie drug dealer adorned on both sides by hunky Abercrombie and Fitch-type models. Openly gay Alexis Arquette butches it up as a drug-addicted cop with some wild sunglasses. A heavily tattooed ex-Judas Priest front man Rob Halford (who it is rumored was booted out of the band for coming out) makes an appearance as the manager of an adult video arcade. And sexy John Leguizamo spends most of the film either half dressed or undressed as he performs a hilarious extended masturbation scene wearing only a sock over his dick. All this, a great story and a terrific soundtrack. We advise you not to rent the R-rated version of this racy movie, there's lot of annoyingly foggy body parts and bleeping.

The story is told entirely through the lens of VH1 reporters, commercials, a paparazzi documentarian and news reports. Everything told in the film has a slant or an angle. We never learn who our characters actually are, only what we see through the eyes of manipulative news reporters. Tina Menzhal (Pare) is a woman's hockey player who is "discovered" by a sports photographer who shows her image to a modelling agency. Tina's presence impresses the agency and she is hired to do some minor modelling work. Tina goes to Paris, fails, and returns home disgusted. Her journey takes her back to New York and she achieves success and "stardom". Along the way she falls for a sexy photographer and a sad middle aged restaurateur, Barry Levine (Aykroyd). Dan Akroyd turns in an excellent performance, breaking the mold in much the way his Saturday Night Live compatriot, Bill Murray, did two years ago in the brilliant Rushmore. Lots of gay and lesbian characters everywhere in the script keep it interesting.

From TV's Comedy Central to your home. Jerri Blank, a 46 year old bisexual high school freshman who has returned to school after being a teenage runaway prostitute and drug addict. She tries to reform and act like the other kids, but her streetwise ways get her into nasty trouble. These first ten episodes chronicle her tragic adventures and are a comic treat. With buck teeth, nasty wrinkles, bad hair and bad dress, Jerri grabs her biology books and forges her way into a foreign world. Supporting characters play upon various politically incorrect stereotypes, like the African-American principal named "Onyx Blackman" or the very butch, innuendo-heavy gym coach Cherri Wolf. Hideous, trashy, and hilariously pushing the boundaries of sex and raunchiness as Comedy Central has oft been known to do, Strangers With Candy is not to be missed.
