Mansfield Park

Lesbian director Rozema's revisionist version of Jane Austen's Mansfield Park is a comic feminist delight -- a truly sweet, romantic film. Like all of Austen's stories, this one revolves around a family, their un-wed daughters and marrying them off. The plucky heroine Fanny Price (a superlative O'Connor), from poor beginnings and now living on the stately Bertram family estate, is being courted by a rake, Henry Crawford (Nivola). She has been in love since childhood with her cousin Edmond (Miller), who is now engaged to Henry's worldly sister Mary. Not to worry, for by the end of the film the proper couplings will be made. Though there are a few liberties taken by Rozema (When Night Is Falling), including a lesbian flirtation - the film possesses a magical quality and remains true to Austen's spirit.

Ellen Barkin plays a tough-talking, hard-drinking homicide detective tracking a serial killer who leaves the bodies in a predictable, grotesque condition. While searching a crime scene, Barkin discovers a briefcase full of lurid S/M photographs and bondage toys and follows the killer into a hallucinatory sexual underworld, including a secret society of lipstick lesbians composed of bored socialites and prominent business women. Peta Wilson (TV's La Femme Nikita) tries to seduce the Ellen Barkin character, and Julian Sands is a transvestite psychiatrist.

All of this weirdness, as well as some clueless homophobia expressed by other members of the detective squad, may go too far for some viewers. But the mystery is well played. As film critic Mark Taylor said: "Combining a woozy, soft-core style with a retro-'80s chic view of lesbian sexuality, Mercy is a torrid noir film sure to offend the politically correct."

From Canada.

The exotic artistry of lesbian composer, singer, dancer, filmmaker, choreographer and performance artist Meredith Monk is captured in this Peter Greenaway documentary. Her unusual approach to music is the most startling aspect of the film -- for Monk eschews, for the most part, recognisable words and presents instead sounds, many of them bird-like chants. This new hybrid provides her with a greater range of communication, the result being musical pieces that feel both ancient and futuristic. Director Greenaway intermixes a Monk performance with interviews with the spirited artist and offers clips from several of her experimental films.

Fans of the independent lesbian feature Claire of the Moon and those simply interested in the filmmaking process will enjoy this behind-the-scenes documentary. Essentially a video scrapbook, it takes the viewer into the initial casting sessions through the frantic, on-location shooting and concludes with the film's enthusiastically received theatrical premiere. Outtakes from the film, five years in the making, and interviews with the beleaguered but determined director Nicole Conn are also included. Some cynics might see this film as simply a vanity production (for the film was made by the same company as Claire of the Moon), but it becomes, on its own merit, an interesting peek into how an independent film is made.

Class struggle, incest, and murder are at the heart of France’s most horrific crime of the 20th century. Much more sexually explicit than what you would expect in a Hong Kong feature, this bisexual infidelity melodrama features copious amounts of full frontal female nudity and some rear-end male nudity. The story follows the unhappily relationship between Terry and Alan, two high powered professionals. Alan is cheating on his wife (with nightly office tryst with a secretary) while the lonely Terry meets and is wonderfully seduced into lesbian lovemaking by the gorgeous photographer Joanne. Complications arise when Alan also becomes romantically involved with Joanne. Now, this Joanne's really a bitch -- she's got a lesbian lover at home, seduces Terry and gets it on with her husband as well. And poor Terry has to deal with the fact that both her lover and husband are three-timing her! A soft-core oddity that sustains interest even when the story stretches believability!

The bevy of gun-toting female assassins in this wildly over-the-top action flick are so tough, steely-eyed and man-hating as to make Catherine Trammell (of Basic Instinct) look like a virginal nursery school teaching by comparison. There are spectacularly aerodynamic action sequences that boarder on the hallucinogenic as well as several scenes where the gorgeous hit women kill men for both their money and the fun of it! And shooting off their testicles are extra points. Master killer Sister Cindy (Sugawara) recruits Kitty (Yau) after she is ceremoniously dumped by her boyfriend (don't worry he paid dearly for that indiscretion). A rival team of evil lesbian killers -- Princess (Ng) and her girl-toy lover Baby (Yao) -- get into the action as well. Princess is a former "student" of Sister Cindy who develops a fierce and violently jealous attraction for the lovely but heterosexually taken Kitty. There are several lovemaking scenes involving the women, the most interesting being one cross-cutting a scene featuring Kitty and her boyfriend with Princess and Baby. Princess, the cigar-chomping lesbian is seen as a bitter ex-lover bent on revenge (who could blame her?). And check out the gratuitous nudity…of the men!

Philly stars as "Anti-matter" an ageing, overweight, drug and alcohol addicted, homeless "rock star". She plays gigs at CBGB on Lower East Side of NYC, steals from her former friends (who can't stand her), fucks whatever moves and seems to have a constant bad hair day (that has stretched into a life of bad hair). Todd Verow's new digital video film is a true expression of art that doesn't care who it offends or amuses, as long as it makes its statement - whatever that is! Anti-matter has been married three times, had so many girl and boyfriends she can't even count (whoever will take her in) - her life is so screwed up - but she just keeps on flogging the folks out there on stage - till even her band leaves her! This is - believe it or not - a fun and heroic film, its a story of a woman who has a dream - and she'll achieve it - even at the expense of "ruining" her life - something she doesn't really care about. Great underground trash rock-n-roll score by the star, Philly and her band "Eager Meat".

Jeff Dupre's Out of the Past delves into the politics and battles behind Kelli Peterson's controversial 1996 Gay-Straight Alliance at a Salt Lake City high school. A thread of portrait vignettes about notable (and sometimes obscure) figures in gay history (Michael Wigglesworth, Sarah Orne Jewett, Henry Gerber, Bayard Rustin, Barbara Gittings) is interwoven with Peterson's story, coming together in the end to point towards a hopeful vision of the future of queer activism in America. With an all-star cast pitching in on the voice-overs (Stephen Spinella, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cherry Jones, Edward Norton, Leland Gannt), this earnest if sometimes simplistic documentary should get plenty of visibility.

In this film adaptation of Miller's novel, the right talent, the right prose and the right direction come together seamlessly to paint three powerful portraits of women in transition. Sedgwick gives one of her best performances as an abused wife and mother who learns to reclaim her power. Posey pulls from a place deep within for her portrayal of a woman whose advancing career and painful family history force her to re-evaluate her stagnant marriage. And Balk makes waves as a hip, goth girl who is brought face-to-face with the troubles of her past. Truly magical is Velocity’s ability to create characters with histories, the kind whose every experience is reflected in their present. It’s a testament to Miller’s detailed screenplay and actresses who understand how to live inside a role.

Paltrow once again showcases her well-practiced British accent in this uncharacteristic Neil Labute romance. And the contrast of Paltrow's steely British resolve against Eckhart's J. Crew-type whimsy is actually a nice one. Labute lightens up a bit from his usual character studies of soul-less deceivers and dips his feet in Merchant Ivory waters, registering much higher on the energy scale than any of those period dramas. Eckhart plays a research assistant who uncovers some handwritten love letters from a nineteenth century poet. He and Paltrow (as a renowned professor) embark on a journey to uncover intense details about the married poet and his secret lover, a writer (Ehle) who subsequently was involved in a lesbian relationship at the time. Will the two researchers fall for each other during this process of discovery? The film is not free from predictability, but with the moving performances and the lyrical storytelling, diehard romantics won't mind so much. Plus, it's nice to see 19th century lesbianism played out in such a matter-of-fact way.

Ariel, a teenager, lives with her single Dad, Sam, in a troubled and vaguely incestuous relationship. At one point, Arial demands that her doctor father perform a breast exam on her. This is merely the first time we are treated to Ariel's nubile, perky little breasts. When Sam stars dating Mary seriously he brings her home to meet the daughter - and you guessed it - bad stuff happens. Ariel actually slugs the girlfriend!

Well Mary is truly lucky, because she has a violent sister to help save her, Julie, who works at, you guessed it, "The Topless Female Boxing" bar! With three scenes shot at the very exciting bar, lesbians and straight men ought to have a field day. And if the breast action isn't enough for you, here's the clincher - When Ariel's tutor arrives for work one day, she's got no pants (or panties) on. She's sitting on her Daddy's bed with shaved pussy, begging her tutor to have sex with her. Total trash, but it's got a few selling points - great nude shots, camp value and believe it or not, the acting ain't half bad either
