"Su Friedrich's brilliant new film mixes documentary and fiction to create a fascinating portrait of lesbian childhood. Revealing the imaginary universe of young lesbians, it's about being at an age when sexual feelings are still vague. The fictional narrative tells the story of Lou: a twelve year old girl living in Brooklyn in the mid 1960's coming to terms with her burgeoning sexuality. Her story is skilfully woven between interviews with twenty adult women who recount salient moments from their childhood's including their first attractions, how they felt when they first heard the word lesbian and thoughts about the possible cause for their homosexuality. Mixing several genres, the film also includes more that 100 photographs of lesbians when they were young girls, and archival footage from educational films and home movies. A must see!"

A gore-fest. Marie has a crush on herschool chum, Alex, and when they head off together to Alex' family's chateau, Marie thinks she has it made. But then this psycho killer shows up, kills Alex' family and hogties Alex. Marie must now rescue the woman she lusts after from a not-really-dead guy who has a thing for necrophilia and chainsaws.

Ah, but wait, there's this twist, see. It turns out that the killer is actually… Marie! Well, a he-Marie, a version of that naughty lesbian who never should have masturbated while watching her friend shower. Far bloodier than usual killer-lesbian flicks (check out the pic with this review). So, the lesson of this film is, that unless lesbians are fully accepted as anintegral part of society, and allowed to masturbate feverishly, they go psycho and kill entire families!

But Anthony's a good Catholic boy, and wants to get a long-standing fantasy off his chest before settling down to a respectable future. Amy's less than thrilled by the concept of a three-way so, like the good lawyer she is, suggests a deal: she'll do same-sex but only if he will too. Featured in this documentary are rare TV and movie clips, along with commentary by a stellar group of jazz instrumentalists and singers who knew her well. Among those recalling Lady Day are the vocalists Carmen McRae and Annie Ross (who were inspired by her), fellow Count Basie alumni Buck Clayton and Harry "Sweets" Edison, and Billie's last accompanist, pianist Max Waldron. Award-winning actress Ruby Dee reads from Holiday's autobiography Lady Sings the Blues. This film program puts Billie Holiday's often anguished life into perspective: as this program proves, she was a victim and a fighter. Above all, she was a genius of a jazz singer, as can be seen in uninterrupted performance clips of such Holiday standards as "Strange Fruit," "What a Little Moonlight Can Do," "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone," "Fine and Mellow," and others. Discover the many faces of this irresistible woman, this "dark lady of the sonnets"; experience the power of her transcendent art.

Lily - Sold Out

Possibly the weakest of Lily Tomlin's performance videos despite the presence of several of her trademark characters and the cameo appearances of Paul Anka, Dolly Parton, Liberace and Joan Rivers. With the lure of gobs of money, Lily agrees to do the "Strip" and venture into the tacky world of Vegas. She soon finds out, however, that her subtle "message-laden" character comedy is no match for the glitzy pizzazz of Vegas superstar-lounge lizard Tommy Velour (Lily doing an on-target spoof of Wayne Newton) and his gaudy,mega-charged ilk. But Lily decides to sell out and the result is a show that would make any polyester-wearing grandmother from Indiana flush with excitement. However, this parody of an already existing parody proves to be tiresome and makes one yearn for Lily to return to her "highbrow" comedyshtick.

While out promoting her upcoming movie, The Seven Ages of Woman, Lily Tomlin finds herself caught up in a political whirlwind which eventually sweeps her into the White House! Imagine if you will: Lily as Pres, Ernestine as the White House switchboard operator, Judith Beasley as Lily's Consumer Advisor, Trudy the Bag Lady as the Chief of Stuff and, most importantly, five-year-old Edith Ann as the Secretary of the Future. It's enough to give Jesse Helms nightmares! While not on par with her best work, and unfortunately shot directly on video, this briskly-paced political satire is still a lot of fun and will provide plenty of amusement for any Tomlin fan.

Review: Lily Tomlin's made-for-HBO special is a live recording of her one-woman show, "Appearing Nitely." Alternately hilarious and poignant, Lily goes on an almost stream-of-consciousness tear as she mines remembrances from her childhood and youth to create a series of memorable characters and situations. She loses herself in the skits, becoming the shopping bag lady, the bratty adolescent and the geeky suburban girl ready to experiment in the whacked-out '60s. After the performance, the camera ventures backstage for a peek into her dressing room which is filled with famous well-wishers. And keep watching, for at the end there is a wonderful segment of Tomlin accepting an award at the Tony Awards and reliving her lifelong dream: not of stardom, but of becoming a waitress!

In a particularly smart portrayal, Hunter plays Judith, an Upper East Side, 40-ish recent divorcée who is having difficulty trying to move on after her break-up. When Judith befriends Pat, her building's elevator operator (with whom she becomes romantically involved), and Liz, a sultry cabaret singer, she begins to awaken from the stagnant, lonely existence she had been living. LaGravenese nicely balances Judith's sexual and personal explorations, and never allows Judith's wonderfully executed fantasy sequences to detract from the story. In finding herself and living out loud, Judith's voyage of discovery makes for unusual but satisfying entertainment. It's all brought to the screen by an engaging, accomplished cast. Wonderful scene shot in a lesbian dance club where Holly Hunter dances rather lasciviously with a gorgeous woman.

Meet Ruth C. Ellis, the worlds oldest out African American lesbian. Born July 23, 1899, in Springfield, Illinois, Ellis reveals on screen that she is not only out now, she's always been out. In fact, she had her first crush (on her high school gym teacher) in 1917. Today, Ruth devotes much of her time to advocating for senior and lesbian rights. This film is a rare opportunity to experience a century-long history of African-American gays and lesbians as seen through the life lived by one inspiring woman. By example she shows us what is possible and what can be realized, if one not only lives long and ages well, but also lives with pride.
